day 59

chocolate chip cookie meat section!

I made Momofuku Milk Bar's recipe for their compost cookies, found on Amateur Gourmet, on Friday. My reaction is definitely "meh"* but other friends liked them. I included potato chips, chocolate chips, and pretzels, which should have been awesome. Instead, the potato chips became unpleasingly chewy to me. Maybe I'll try again with other chips....

* This reaction, unfortunately, has not stopped me from eating them.

I missed the entire rainy season in SF last year (I was in Thailand. I KNOW. poor me.)
Now I'm getting my fill.

day 53 - blocky meat sections

02.22.10

watercolor and ink on kraft paper

It makes Blocky sad to think that anyone would eat him.

But here are his meat sections. you know, if you had to.

day 52

02.21.10

original gouache and watercolor painting, 6x9inches

Continuing in my weekend of eating and drinking, I went to The Alembic bar on Friday to celebrate a very awesome art-week for me (an amazing commission! meat section art prints! print requests! etsy sales!) with a little cocktail-ing and pork sliders . On recommendation from the staff, I passed up a second Boulevarier for their newest drink, the Queen of Diamonds. It was worth it. I haven't had a ton of wine cocktails, but this was a winner. Bitterness from the cranberry-infused Campari was lightened by the sparkling rose and then the punch of the cachaca. I imagine sipping several of these on a warm sunny afternoon. Or any day, really....

day 51

02.20.10

watercolor and ink, original 5 x5.

I went to Mission Street Food with some friends this past Saturday for a dinner featuring pig. Although they were sold out of the Dr. Pepper ribs by the time we got there (sad face!) they added what turned out to be my favorite dish of the night - ham hock hash with goat cheese and parsley oil. it was yum.

So here are the hocks, in situ. He also might be wearing pink legwarmers.

Day 50!!!!!!!!

02.19.10

Don't ever try to butcher a ghost. It. Will. Not. Work.

To celebrate 50 days of MEAT SECTIONS, I'm offering "Ghost Meat" as a 7x11 inch print here!

EDIT: This one begged me to be made into a poster. It was kind of a weird conversation. Anyways, a slammin' 13 x19 inch poster is available for $25 in my shop, here. The quality of the scan is better than above, so check out the shop to see it. The print came out awesome, made with archival inks on archival paper. This one was a big hit at Indie Mart craft show.

day 49

02.18.10
7x10, charcoal and pencil on drawing paper

little bunny butchery chart.

It is surprisingly difficult to find a rabbit butchery chart showing the cuts of meat as a reference. And its not like chefs don't butcher them into parts, as my teensy tiny rack of rabbit ribs at the French Laundry proves.

This seems to be the typical way of butchering a rabbit, but Judy Rogers has another way in the Zuni Cafe Cookbook, which involves deboning the saddle. I'll tackle that method next.

day 48

This little piggie went to the beach, to enjoy the awesome warm weather here in SF.

day 46

02.15.10

Last week in art class, we practiced shading and gradients. So here is a gradient pork meat diagram!

The Bruery said something nice...

So The Bruery got wind of my ode to their Melange No. Sechs beer, which I sampled last week during SF Beer Week, and they were kind enough to feature my painting on their blog.

If Bruery distributes in your city, I highly recommend you check them out. They make some seriously delicious beers!

Thanks guys!

day 45

02.14.10

original watercolor and ink illustration. 6x6"

Heart meat section, sans labels. Hearts aren't into labels, despite what surgeons may say.

day 44

02.13.10
Original watercolor and ink; 6X9 inches

Catching up from the long weekend....

Break down of The Bruery's "Melange No. 6" or Number Sechs.

I had this beer at The Alembic in SF as part of 2010 SF Beer Week. Made by the Bruery as a special Valentine's Day beer. It was one of the more interesting beers I've ever had. Kind of like beer with a fruit punch chaser. Looked like a bloody mary. seriously.

Friday, February 5, 2010

pardon the interruption.....someone said something nice.

Just a quick interruption in the meat frenzy, but I have to say I was super flattered yesterday to see that Marissa, one of the gals behind Two Story Sketchbook, included this little blog in their "Things we Love Thursday" series. It's so nice when someone takes the time out to say that they like what you are doing, so thanks Marissa! Strangely enough she has know one of my good friends here in SF, Kimra, since they were teenagers. Weird!

Marissa and her friend Sarah are behind Two Story Sketchbook, another daily art blog that is pretty darn cool. Each day, both create a piece typically based on a weekly theme (they take requests!) The results, as you can see, are awesome. It is interesting to see what two people ocme up with each day for the same topic.

THEME: "Q"

Well, enough with the self-congratulation and thank yous. Just get yourself over to Two Story Sketchbook to see some awesome daily art diptychs.

day 36

02.05.10

A penguin's meat sections, from the point of view of a seal.

Those foodie seals, always after the feet and head.

Origami instructions from Origami Club.

Thursday, February 4, 2010

day 35

02.04.10

Blind contour drawing of pork meat cuts

I just started taking a drawing class here in San Francisco at Root Division. Last week we started doing blind contour drawings....basically drawing the countours of objects, in one continuous line, without looking. So it is a bit challenging, but I decided to try to do a pork meat sections.

this is the result. I, uh, wouldn't use them to butcher a pig.

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

day 34

02.03.10
Beef butchery diagram, indicating tri tip.
Watercolor and ink on newsprint.

Apparently trip-tip is a very California beef cut, and out east, it is hard to find it.

That's too bad, because it is nom nom nom. suck it, east coast.

Monday, February 1, 2010

day 32

Butcher that cupcake!

watercolor and ink on newsprint.

Back from a two day break. Maybe I'll do a double post a couple of times....
